Hoyas have a reputation for being fussy, but many varieties are tough, slow and very forgiving. These seven are the best place to start if you want a rare-looking plant that does not demand constant attention.

1. Hoya carnosa
The classic wax plant. It tolerates a missed watering, grows steadily and produces sweet-smelling flowers once it matures.
2. Hoya kerrii
The heart-shaped sweetheart plant. Slow but bulletproof on a bright windowsill.
3. Hoya linearis
A trailing Hoya with soft, thin leaves that looks beautiful in a hanging pot.
4. Hoya australis
Glossy round leaves and fast growth when it receives enough light.
5. Hoya pubicalyx
Long, speckled leaves and tall growth. It likes a moss pole or trellis.
6. Hoya polyneura
Known as the fishtail Hoya, with unusual leaf shapes and easy care.
7. Hoya lacunosa
Small, textured leaves and intensely fragrant flowers. Compact and perfect for shelves.

Care basics for every beginner Hoya
- Light: bright and indirect, with some gentle sun.
- Water: only when the soil is dry. Under-water rather than over-water.
- Soil: airy mix of bark, perlite and potting soil.
- Food: a half-strength fertilizer once a month in the growing season.
