Monstera deliciosa

The classic Swiss cheese plant. Large leaves that can reach 60 cm across, with deep splits and holes as the plant matures. It can grow into a floor-standing statement plant of 2 metres or more.

Monstera adansonii

Also called the Swiss cheese vine. Smaller, oval leaves with many oval holes along the veins. It is a faster, trailing or climbing vine that suits shelves, hanging baskets and small spaces.

Key differences

  • Leaf size: deliciosa is much larger.
  • Holes: adansonii has enclosed holes; deliciosa has splits at the leaf edge and holes.
  • Growth: adansonii is a thinner, faster vine; deliciosa is bulkier and slower.
  • Space: adansonii fits small rooms better.

Care for both

Both like bright, indirect light, an airy aroid mix and watering when the top 4 cm of soil is dry. Adansonii likes a little more humidity, and both reward a moss pole with larger leaves.
